The Boys Are Actually Growing Fat - Eating as Good as at Home Except They Have no Sweetmeats.

Description

Camp Bryan Grimes, Co. L, 1st NCVUSA

There is a general hustle in the camp today, though no definite information has been given out regarding the removal of the first regiment to Chicamauga or to Tampa, which will very likely occur during the next week.
Company L is in good spirits, and the boys are actually growing fat on their allowance of beef, beans, tomatoes, rice, etc. We are furnished all kinds of vegetables, and about the only difference between here and at home is that we have no sweetmeats.
Mr. Parks King, who was to have graduated at Davidson College, is here, having been appointed to the third assistant stewardship of the hospital department.
Excursion trains run into the city from various parts of the State, people coming from all quarters to see the soldier boys before they leave, possibly forever.
Very few have deserted the regiment. One young man who had planned to escape has changed his mind.
The boys have had unusual privilages for army life, but the officials are becoming more strict.
Company L is quartered on Tenth street, and is named "Concord Street."
With the exception of a few "bad colds," the health of our boys is splendid, there being no case of real sickness from our company.
A visit to the Soldiers Home in East Raleigh will confirm the statement that the old veterans are well cared for. Some of the old soldiers there would like to go into battle again if their country could use them.
It is romored in camp this afternoon that Col. J F Armfiled and Captain Crawford of the Governor's Guards, will leave in a short while for Tampa, preparator to transferring our regiment.
Fried chicken, ice cream, doughnuts, cake, etc, are at a premium in camp.
